SWAT Kats co-creator Christian Tremblay took the time to answer a few fan questions that were organized in February 2009. This interview is technically incomplete, as Christian’s schedule has been very busy, but perhaps someday the remainder of the questions will be answered. Received January 7, 2010.
Q: Did you and your brother create the character of Occulus/Morbulus, or was he a creation of Glenn Leopold?
A: I think it came from Glen, but it is a blurr, I’m not fully certain.
Q: If the former, what sort of thought process went into making him?
A: It was done through brainstorming, we would sit down in our offices and think about stories, character, etc. Actually, a lot of those brainstorming session happens in our Hanna Barbera’s off, ( which used to be Jane Barbera’s personal office earlier).
Q: In fact, how much of The Giant Bacteria’s story you two come up with before Leopold wrote the script?
A: Quite a bit came from us. I did a poster of the creatures that inspired the stories.
Q: Another Giant Bacteria-related question: what does Dr. Zyme’s first initial “N” stand for?
A: Honestly I don’t know, would need to ask glen.
Q: Also, did Zyme get killed or not?
A: He’s probably dead……!!
Q: Why did you choose the names Razor and T-Bone for the two SWAT Kats?
A: Glen and Davis Doi found the name, and we thought it was cool!!
Q: Did the two SWAT Kats always look like they do now or did they differ when they were first created?
A: They differ quite a bit, initially it was a very cartoon show………….
Q: Was there an origin story planned for Dark Kat like there was for Dr. Viper and other villains?
A: There would have been if we would have done more show.
Q: If so, how did he come to be Dark Kat?
A: We would have created then, but as of now………….still a mystery!
Q: Why did you decide to make Felina the niece of Commander Feral?
A: It create[s] close personal conflicts.
Q: Are you surprised there is still a fan following of the SWAT Kats after fifteen years?
A: ABSOLUTELY AMAZED,,,,, and I want to thank everyone of you guys!!
Q: How did the idea for the show come about? I.e., what was your inspiration?
A: The idea of SK came when I did a design for a sleepwear, back in Canada, and when Yvon saw it , he said that he looks like a jet pilot ( in reference that cat are a lot used in the USA Air squadron…………………..!
